This route was added in 2011 adding approximately 50-60 miles to the total mileage of the Iron Dog which now exceeds 2,000 miles.

Saturday, February 25th: Pro Class Finish

  • 9:00 am | Tired Iron races.
  • 11:30 am | Iron Dog starts moving in to setup for the Finish.
  • Approximately 1:00 pm | 1st Place team should be getting close to the end of the race.
  • 5:00 pm | We start wrapping up most of the big Finish activities and head for the award ceremonies.
  • Late night | After party at Pike’s Landing!

Finish Route

The route goes south of Fairbanks through the Fort Wainwright Recreational Area toward North Pole, Alaska and Chena River Lakes Flood Control Project. Racers will drive north through the Flood Project and onto the Chena River heading back toward downtown Fairbanks. Special thanks to John Johnston, Compeaus, Fort Wainwright and Army Corps of Engineers for all the effort in making this route possible.

Our Fairbanks Headquarters location is located at the SpringHill Suites in downtown Fairbanks. We’re expecting the 1st Place team to arrive sometime around 1PM on Saturday, February 25th. Stay tuned to our Facebook page and this website for the latest news about this and all our events.

Most importantly, we want to give Fairbanks a big show and attract more fans and attendance. Also, the Tired Iron event will be going on the morning before our Pro Class racers arrive which should add to the festivities of the day. This group of recreational teams is setting out on a 1,000-plus mile ride along the northern route of the Iditarod trail. Typically a slightly more casual affair, we send these riders out for a big adventure just before we setup for the Pro Class Start on Sunday.

  • 8:30-9:30 am | Trail Class teams starting showing up and getting ready.
  • 10:00 am | Trail teams start rolling out.
  • 11:00 am | Sponsors and vendors setup for the Saturday events and position for the Pro Class race on Sunday.

The Iron Dog TV Special “The Iron Dog: Cold, Hard Thrills” with scenes from our DVD Seven Days to Survive will air on KTUU Channel 2 after the Super Bowl (and The Voice). To celebrate this TV Special, Iron Dog has partnered up with Odom, Rumrunner’s and many more to kick off the Iron Dog season. This will be the third airing of Seven Days to Survive, a special production made during the 2011 race. In addition to the main show, KTUU Channel 2 will be airing NEW interviews and commentary about the coming 2012 race.

Iron Dog partners with Alaska’s Healing Hearts to raise funds for Alaska combat veterans and their families.

Alaskan combat veterans will benefit from the 2012 Iron Dog Raffle made possible by the generous support of Kendall Toyota of Alaska, Alaska Power Sports, USTravel, Alaska’s Healing Hearts and the Iron Dog.

“The generous support of Kendall Toyota, Alaska Power Sports and other sponsors is making it possible for the Iron Dog and Alaska’s Healing Hearts to come together in a unique blend of exciting promotions for the Iron Dog resulting in real charitable fundraising,” said Iron Dog executive director Kevin Kastner. “I’m truly excited to see what becomes of this unique blend of partnerships, sponsors and our new spokesperson Ken Peltier. Ultimately, it will be great to see our efforts supporting Alaskan veterans.”

Teams running the Iron Dog often have their own charitable causes such as skin cancer awareness, Wounded Warrior and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Iron Dog chose to work with Alaska’s Healing Hearts especially due to its local focus and military ties that align with Iron Dog’s presenting sponsor, the Alaska National Guard.

“On behalf of our President and founder, Dan McDowell, and the Board of Directors of Alaska’s Healing Hearts, it is indeed an honor work with the Iron Dog, Kendall Toyota, and the Alaska National Guard.  Our mission of serving our Battle Wounded and Battle Weary is truly a team effort. The 2012 Iron Dog Raffle:

  • 50% of the net proceeds will be donated to Alaska’s Healing Hearts, an Alaska based veterans organization benefiting Alaskan combat veterans and their families.
  • Only 2,000 tickets will be sold. Tickets will go on sale December 14, 2011 for $60.00 each.
  • Drawing to be held at the end of the 2012 Iron Dog race in downtown Fairbanks, February 25, 2012. Winners need not be preset to win.
  • Kendall Toyota of Alaska has generously donated a 2012 Toyota Tundra as the Grand Prize.
  • Second place is a 2012 Polaris Rush PRO R 600 donated by Alaska Power Sports.
  • Third place is a Hawaiian vacation for two provided by USTravel

The 2012 Iron Dog Safety Expo, Tech Inspection and Banquet is sponsored by Donlin Gold. The Donlin Gold Safety Expo will have quite a few vendors and NAOI safety classes going on. Every Iron Dog team will be present during the day while undergoing pre-race inspection of their safety and survival gear. The event is open to the public from 10am – 3pm. Come meet the racers and pick up some great safety tips along the way!
