Now comes the repair work...

After teams arrive into Nome, they’ll take a few hours to rest before making repairs to their snowmachines. Teams are allowed 20 minutes off the clock for inspection, giving them time to determine what parts they might need to make repairs. Once they begin actual work on their machines, the clock starts ticking and counts as time on the course.

We’ll start capturing images and videos from the garage as teams start working and post them on Facebook and the website.

Meanwhile, the rest of the volunteers and Iron Dog staff are busy setting up for the halfway ceremonies and banquet at the National Guard Armory. Join us at 6:00 P.M., Wednesday, February 22, 2012 for food, awards and thanks to all those who make the race possible.

The restart of the race begins 8:00 A.M. Thursday. For details on the garage procedures, work time and Nome restart, check out the Pro Class rules (Sections 10 and 11).

The top three teams are into Nome with a large pack behind them.

It appears that a large number of teams will be making it to the halfway stop in Nome this year. Reasonably good trail conditions, cooperative weather and well prepared teams all contribute to the low number of scratched teams. In a typical Iron Dog race, if there is such as thing, the attrition rate would be closer to 30 percent by now.

Teams are racing to Nome for the halfway ceremonies, $10,000 Gold Rush Prize from Donlin Gold and repair time in the Nome City Garage. Meanwhile, family, friends and Iron Dog officials are preparing for their arrival.

Top 10 Prediction

Trying to calculate who is the top 10 right now is challenging with front-running teams taking their last layovers on the Yukon.

Here’s a prediction of what the top 10 looks like, based on teams arriving in the same time it took Minnick/Olstad (Team #16) to ride from Ruby to Galena to Kaltag. This is wild speculation especially since every team will have a different pace once they start rolling out of their layovers, but this predictions demonstrates what the leaderboard would read if they were presently all laying over in the same location using their current course time separations.

1st: Team #16 – Minnick/Olstad (15:34)
2nd: Team #10 – Morgan/Olds (16:04)
3rd: Team #39 – Aklestad/Loyer (16:20)
4th: Team #17 – McKenna/VanMeter (16:26)
5th: Team #6 – Huntington/West (16:28)
6th: Team #2 – Sottosanti/Zwink (16:50)
7th: Team #11 – Davis/Palin (17:13)
8th: Team #8 – Gueco/Johnson (17:17)
9th: Team #3 – Dixon/Wold (18:02)
10th: Team #9 – Johnson/West (18:46)

Here's what the leaders look like this moment.

From the Iron Dog Office in Anchorage
I recently repaired some bad data entry regarding McGrath hold times.

Here’s what the leaders look like this moment.

1st – Minnick / Olstad – Team #16 into Kaltag on last 8 hour layover on the river system section of the trail with course time of 15 hours 43 minutes.

2nd – Morgan / Olds – Team #10 on last 8 hour layover on the river system section of the trail with a course time of 14 hours 49 minutes. Assuming Team #2 can make it to Kaltag in the same time it took Team #16 (1 hour 15 minutes) they are likely still in second place with a course time of 16 hours and 6 minutes.

3rd – Huntington / West – Team #6 on last 8 hour layover on the river system section of the trail with a course time of 15 hours 13 minutes.Assuming Team #6 can make it to Kaltag in the same time it took Team #16 (1 hour 15 minutes) they could technically STILL be in third place with a course time of 16 hours and 28 minutes.

4th – Sottosanti / Zwink – Team #2 on last 8 hour layover on the river system section of the trail with a course time of 15 hours 35 minutes. Assuming 1 hour 15 minutes run to Kaltag STILL 4th place

5th – Gueco / Johnson – Team #8 on last 8 hour layover on the river system section of the trail with a course time of 16 hours 02 minutes.

6th – Dixon / Wold – Team #3 on last 8 hour layover on the river system section of the trail with a course time of 16 hours 47 minutes.

Team #13 is on the move at the moment and was about 55 minutes behind Team #2 at Galena which puts them in close running for 6th place, but their time to Kaltag is not looking to be as fast and could move them down the chart

Corrections as of 10:00 P.M. : Time for Morgan / Olds updated and other predictions for Team #39 and Team #17 added.

Team #39, Tyler Aklestad and Aaron Loyer hold a 10 minute lead.

As of this morning (07:51 Alaska time), Team #39, Tyler Aklestad and Aaron Loyer have made a dramatic comeback after a brief swim and six hour layover in the Puntilla checkpoint. They now hold a ten minute (00:10) lead ahead of the second place Team #16. GPS tracking reported some incredible rates of speed for Team #39, nearing 90 miles per hour in some of the early sections of the course.

Most teams are now taking either a combined fourteen hour layover or already used their six and eight at two checkpoints. Frontrunner teams are expected to make it to Galena by tonight once they are released by their hold times and reset on the course.

About the 6 hour layover
For 2012 a six hour flexible layover was added to give racers additional flexibility to handle human or mechanical issues. Racers are still required to take a mandatory eight hour layover going northbound in the regional areas: 1) By McGrath 2) On the Yukon River by Kaltag 3) On the coast by White Mountain. The six hour can be used by itself (which Team #39 did in Puntilla) or declared in combination with their mandatory eight hour layover to make for a fourteen hour layover (which many have done in McGrath). Ultimately, the six hour “flexible layover” must be used by Kaltag. This small addition has already proven to be a valuable tool for keeping teams in the hunt for victory!

About McGrath hold time
This “hold time” in McGrath is designed to get teams closer together on the trail. Basically, we are holding teams that left Big Lake earlier to get them closer together physically on the trail (adjusting their actual distance from one another on the ground to closer represent their course time separation). Here’s a link to the starting order which also shows the hold times in McGrath.

Thousands of people gathered at Big Lake today to send off our 31 Pro Class teams to begin the Start of the 2012 Iron Dog Race. Despite predictions of thin ice and reports of dangerous conditions, the race started without any issues. It was great to see so many Iron Dog fans, sponsors, volunteers and supporters coming together to share the experience.
