In yet another new move for the 2011 Iron Dog race, the finish will be in a new location this year!
Due to increasingly poor ice conditions on the Chena River downstream and the opportunity to join the Annual Tired Iron Event, we are moving the finish line of the race to downtown Fairbanks. This new route will add approximately 50-60 miles bringing the total mileage for the Iron Dog to more than 2,000 miles.
New Route
The new route will veer south of Fairbanks through the Fort Wainwright Recreational Area toward North Pole, Alaska and Chena River Lakes Flood Control Project. Racers will drive north through the Flood Project and onto the Chena River heading back toward downtown Fairbanks. Special thanks to John Johnston, Compeaus, Fort Wainwright and Army Corps of Engineers for all the effort in bringing this new route together!
Some details are still coming together regarding the Fairbanks Headquarters location and specific schedule of events. In general, we expect to have a downtown location where race fans can get information, track the racers and find up to the minute information. We’re expecting the 1st Place team to arrive sometime around 1PM on Saturday, February 26th. Stay tuned to our Facebook page and this website for the latest news about this and all our events.
Why Downtown?
Most importantly, we wanted to give Fairbanks a big show and attract more fans and attendance. Also, the Tired Iron event will be going on the morning before our Pro Class racers arrive which should add to the festivities of the day. Come to Fairbanks, check out the events, the incredible Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center, Yukon Quest headquarters and the sponsors of both great events going on that day!
